OpenAI announced GPT-6.1 Terra on 2026-10-26: a fast, efficient model that combines detailed visual reasoning, precise computer use, and clearer, more natural writing—a significant step up from GPT-5.6 Terra. Official examples span everyday work: drafting proposals, interpreting technical drawings, filling forms, and editing videos. The same day OpenAI published a system-card addendum on safety evaluations, and AWS announced the model as generally available on Amazon Bedrock.
Cost–intelligence frontier: API half-price, more work per allowance
Standard API prices are 50% lower than GPT-5.6 Terra and GPT-6.1 Sol. In ChatGPT Work and Codex, the same plan allowance covers more tasks than with GPT-5.6 Terra and substantially more than with GPT-6.1 Sol or GPT-6 Astra. Pricing is $1 / $0.05 cached / $5 per million tokens (input / cached input / output). Developers call it via the OpenAI API as gpt-6.1-terra.
From visual understanding to action: Agents’ Last Exam, MMMU-Pro, OSWorld

On Agents’ Last Exam—a professional-task benchmark that includes turning architectural drawings into a 3D model and reviewing an animated film shot by shot for a restoration log—at medium reasoning effort GPT-6.1 Terra scores 15 percentage points higher than GPT-5.6 Terra at about one-third the cost, and performs on par with GPT-6 Astra at roughly one-tenth its price per token. At max effort, Terra is over three times as token-efficient as Claude Opus 5.5 and one-fourth its price per token, for about a 9× lower cost per task; it also completes tasks over three times faster than both GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol.
On the visual-reasoning benchmark MMMU-Pro, it outperforms GPT-5.6 Terra at every reasoning setting and nearly matches Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol at much lower cost. On multistep desktop OSWorld 2.1, at medium effort it surpasses GPT-5.6 Terra’s best score at a fraction of the cost per task.
Factuality and coding jump; hardest coding still favors Sol/Astra
On OpenAI’s internal error-inducing-prompt benchmark, the low-effort error rate fell from 53.6% with GPT-5.6 Terra to 16.7% with GPT-6.1 Terra (a drop of nearly 37 percentage points); at maximum effort the error rate fell by 18 percentage points to 4.3%, nearly matching Astra and Sol. On Terminal-Bench 4.0 at max effort, GPT-6.1 Terra solves 50.3% of tasks—more than double GPT-5.6 Terra’s published 21.5%. OpenAI states that for the most complex coding tasks, GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra remain the better choice. On Terminal-Bench-Science 0.1 at max reasoning, Terra surpasses GPT-6.1 Sol at lower cost and comes within five points of Opus 5.5 at less than one-fifth the estimated cost.
Safety and alignment: Critical cyber, High bio/chem
Under the Preparedness Framework (system-card addendum), GPT-6.1 Terra is treated as Critical in cybersecurity, High for biological and chemical capability, and below High for AI self-improvement; it uses the same safeguards stack as GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol. Alignment evaluations say it is more likely than GPT-5.6 Terra to stay in scope and honestly disclose limitations and blockers, with strong resistance in prompt-injection tests.
Availability and Bedrock
Starting today, GPT-6.1 Terra is available to Plus, Pro, Enterprise, and Edu users in ChatGPT Work and Codex; developers access it via the OpenAI API as gpt-6.1-terra. The same day, AWS announced general availability on Amazon Bedrock, with a context window of up to 1 million input tokens and support for text and image inputs.
